General
The course aims to introduce you to the basic KM concepts and to enable you to practice a KM tool or solution in your workplace. At the end of the course, you are expected to be able to
- Define commonly used KM terms
- Practice or use at least one KM tool through a workplace KM practicum
- Link KM to business results or organizational performance
Workplace KM Practicum
There are no exams. You will select a KM tool or solution as your workplace KM practicum. To ensure usefulness and relevance of your practicum to the organization you belong to, you must perform a Quick Business Process Assessment and based on the results, consult your superior on the selection of the KM tool or solution to use.
You are expected to submit (1) summaries of two articles or two book chapters, and (2) a short Internet research paper; both should be related to your chosen KM practicum topic. The summaries should consist of 2-3 pages of bullet points or short paragraphs. "Short" Internet research paper means the scope is specific enough that you can finish it in 2-3 weeks, it can be written up in 10 pages or less, single-spaced. At the end of the semester, you submit and present a PowerPoint presentation and a Practicum report. The PowerPoint presentation is the same one you will present in your organization in case your boss asks you to explain your practicum to him or to your work colleagues. The Practicum report is a short guideline or manual describing to your boss or colleagues the steps and guidelines you followed in implementing your practicum, which they can follow in case your boss decides to replicate your KM practicum in other teams or units.
Submit e-copies by email; hard copies are not accepted (save the trees!).
Three back-to-back class meetings will be scheduled after the last day of classes in a semester for presentation of the results of workplace KM practicums. The sequence of presenters will be randomized and announced before the class meetings for presentations.
Online Discussions
There will be online (asynchronous) discussions on two KM case studies. Answers and reactions are posted in an online shared Google document.
Protocols
Email subject heading: whenever you email me, the subject heading must be TM 298 (YOURSECTION) - topic. YOURSECTION can be WEDN or THUR, etc.
File name: every file you upload or send me must have the following file name: TM 298 - YOURSURNAME - filetype. Filetype can be: Student data sheet, QBPA, etc.
Absences and Failure to Meet Class Requirements
If you will be/were absent in a lecture, you must (a) inform me by email stating your reason for absence so that it can be marked as "excused", and (b) watch its video recording. Attendance in lectures and other class requirements are listed in the columns of the TM 298 Progress Tracking Form. According to UPD rules, if unexcused absences exceed 20% a grade of 5 may be given, and if excused absences exceed 20% a grade of DRP may be given.
Grades
Dr. Talisayon dislikes having to give grades. Unfortunately, grades are still a fact of university life.
Your grade will be based on (a) the quantity and quality of your four submissions pertaining to your practicum topic: Internet research paper, two summarizations, PowerPoint presentation and practicum report; (b) the extent of your participation in class activities, and (c) emailed feedback from your boss to me regarding your KM practicum. The relative weight of these factors are:
Summarization of two articles/chapters related to practicum topic 10%
Internet/library research on practicum topic 10%
Practicum report and presentation 50%
Online class participation (including feedback from superior, if any) 30%
Total 100%
A very good feedback from your boss can substantially increase your grade over the above considerations. There is no fixed format on your boss' feedback emailed directly to me.
